Will Herbs Help Fibromyalgia Symptoms?

I underwent three major surgeries in the past two years, and have suffered with increasing pain and debilitating physical condition. I have been unable to much relief and after numerous tests and doctors with no diagnosis, I became increasingly depressed. The depression resulted in sleep deprivation and the doctors finally prescribed antidepressants and suggested that I see a psychiatrist for a possible “brain chemical imbalance”.

I was hurt, angry and nearly desperate! I knew that what I was experiencing was physical, not mental. I’ve always been a very active person, with many interests and hobbies. Now, I was unable to even walk across the room without getting out of breath and was not able to do anything except lie on the couch all day. This was not me, and it was not “in my head”! Or was it?

Finally, I took it upon myself to search the Internet for possible solutions to my declining physical condition and found the net to be a truly incredible resource. I was able to use my accumulated information along with previous test results, and my symptoms to locate a doctor in California.

Dr. Martin T. Jensen is an International Brain Chemistry Expert and I was able to have some consultations with him. His findings were that I met the criteria for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Panic Attacks, severe Insomnia, A.D.D. and Fibromyalgia. He felt these diseases were caused by brain chemical imbalances and after trying a series of various drugs, I improved some, but not enough.

Due to limited finances, I was unable to consult with Dr. Jensen again, but his trial and error methods and resultant findings, left me with a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. So back I went to the Internet.

Everything I found out about this difficult to diagnose and treat disease, fit me perfectly. I did indeed, have the history and symptoms. The problem is, there’s no recognized standard of treatment. It seems everyone reacts to medications in different ways and there’s no set of protocol which will provide relief for all cases, although in recent months and years, new medications have become available.

I’ve talked via the net to a great many people and investigated the known treatments for Fibro, and I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no one answer. Every sufferer is unique and it’s important to take charge of your own life and treatment. I have had reactions and side effects to many of the normal prescribed drugs. Finally, I just quit taking the mind-altering medications and those prescribed for depression. I could not stand to continue living a life submerged in a fog, with no emotions, unable to feel and experience the joys of life.

I began to feel better. Better in the sense that my mind cleared, and I found myself able to experience joy and feelings that I hadn’t felt for a long time. At last I could laugh and cry with my husband and family! It felt great!

Physically, I was still having difficulty in doing anything which required physical exertion. I tried some herbals like, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng and various combinations which are supposed to give you energy. After various periods of trial and error I have settled, temporarily on a combination that seems to have helped some. I still have a lot of pain, and am very limited physically, but now I am able to do more around the house as long as I don’t over do it and get enough sleep.

I’ve found the following combination has allowed me to feel more human, and enables me to at least get dressed and do crafts, light housework and my writing and art.

Vitamin B-100 Complex and Vitamin C-1000.

A GINKGO BILOBA combination: 69 mg, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Gotu Kola, 100 mg; Pine Bark Extract, 250 mcg; and Cayenne, 25 mg. And

KWIK ENERGY, a combination of: Ma Huang, Spirulina, Royal Jelly, Inosine, African Kola Nut, Lipoic Acid, Octacosanol, Bee Pollen, Ginseng, Goldenseal, Quercetin, Guarana, Vitamin E-30IU, PPAK, Cayenne and Cytochrome C.

I tried taking just one KWIK ENERGY tablet each morning, which helped, but I couldn’t do much except dress and walk across the room periodically. When I take two, I can feel more energy and actually WANT to do things, even though I am limited in my activity. I know these herbs are not a remedy, but my doctor said there was nothing harmful in them and as long as they make me feel more alive, I’ll continue to take them.

One thing I have discovered through this long, debilitating situation, without hope, you have nothing! Hope is essential to healing, in both the mind and the body! Never give up hope, for with hope, you can do anything! In saying this, I have to tell you that about six months ago, my new doctor prescribed Gabapentin, and it has truly helped me to be able to do more, but activity still has to be carefully regulated.
