Insomnia or ´sleeplessness´ is a disorder in which a person has difficulty sleeping.  The person suffering from insomnia not only experiences difficulty in getting sleep, but also staying asleep.. Here are some natural remedies for insomnia which can really help you sleep better.

Insomnia can be broadly classified as temporary insomnia, acute insomnia and chronic insomnia. In case of temporary insomnia, the person has difficulty getting sleep for less than a week. In case of acute insomnia, the bout of sleeplessness last for more than a week but less than a month, while in case of chronic insomnia, the person has difficulty sleeping for more than a month. Read on to learn about the some natural remedies to get rid of insomnia.

  1. Getting adequate sunlight during the day is perhaps the best way to treat insomnia naturally. Getting adequate early morning sunlight ensures optimum levels of vitamin D in our body. Vitamin D, also known as the ´Sunshine Vitamin´, regulates and controls the release of melatonin, a hormone that is linked to sound sleep. Lower levels of melatonin in our body can result in difficulty in getting sleep.
  2. Having sex before you go to bed is another effective way to get a sound sleep.  Sexual intercourse with your spouse or regular partner stimulates the release of feel-good hormones, which make you feel de-stressed and relaxed, thus helping you catch sound sleep.
  3. Having a hot water bath with Epsom salt, two hours before bedtime also helps in getting rid of insomnia. But one must remember that having a bath just before sleeping can stimulate our body and delay sleep, so make it sure that you do not hit the sack for at least two hours after your hot bath.
  4. Have a teaspoon of honey along with warm milk, half an hour before going to bed. This will have a mild sedative effect and help you in getting sound sleep.
  5. Having a warm water foot bath containing few drops of chamomile, half an hour before bedtime is another great way to combat insomnia.
  6. Massaging your neck and shoulder areas with lavender oil is another effective home remedy to treat insomnia. You can also substitute lavender oil with either sandalwood oil or rose oil.

Excessive mental stress and depression can only worsen your insomnia. So when it comes to combating insomnia, relaxation techniques play a very important role, besides the natural remedies for insomnia.

De-stressing techniques like laughter therapy, meditation and Yogic breathing techniques are very effective in combating insomnia too. Avoiding smoking, alcohol and excessive caffeine consumption is also very important for these natural remedies to be effective. Now you know the various ways to treat insomnia naturally, so make a pick and get set to have a sound sleep.
